Life lessons for equal rights
Nancy Diapouli is the first swimming coach with Down Syndrome! She counts many victories and distinctions, conveying the message of equal rights through her contribution to Special Olympics Hellas.
More specifically, Nancy has been presenting the Flame of Hope Ceremony as a Special Olympic ambassador since 2009. Her love for swimming started at a very young age. At the same time, she has made history by being the first kindergarten teacher with Down Syndrome.
She has several awards, the most recent being her first place win in the Panhellenic swimming competitions held in Loutraki in the backstroke category. Today she fulfills another one of her dreams, becoming the first swimming coach with Down Syndrome!
The ERT (Greek National Broadcast Channel) camera entered the Supported Living Home of the Down Syndrome Association of Greece, in Thessaloniki, and spoke to the adults who live independently in their own small apartments. They have become self-reliant and are taking important steps towards their autonomy. They discussed about their everyday life away from their parental homes, while those in charge referred to the parallel actions that have been taken, but also to all the things that should and can be done to support adults with Down Syndrome to acquire a life based on their own choices.
